Accessibility statement

We want everyone to be able to compare products on FairlyRanked, whatever device or assistive technology they use.

Our target

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the whole site. That includes:

  • pages that work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline and a link to skip to the content;
  • text and controls with enough contrast in both the light and the dark theme;
  • information never shown by colour alone: yes-or-no values say Yes or No, and the best value in a comparison says “Best” in words;
  • drawings and charts with their values also given as text;
  • no motion that cannot be turned off: the site follows your device’s reduced motion setting;
  • layouts that work from small phones to wide screens, without scrolling sideways.

How we test it

  • Every change to the site runs automated accessibility checks (axe) on its pages in both themes, at phone, tablet and desktop widths, in Chrome and, at phone width, in Safari’s engine (WebKit).
  • Automated tests check that menus, the photo viewer, the compare tool and other controls work with a keyboard.
  • A test checks every pair of text and background colours against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast ratios.
  • We check new features by hand with a keyboard and on a phone.
  • The site has been tested with the VoiceOver screen reader on iOS and macOS.

Known limitations

  • The filters, the compare tray and comparison, the explanations behind the small “i” buttons and the search need JavaScript. Without it, a category page shows every model, and the comparison and search pages say they need JavaScript.
  • The size drawings and the bars beside some values are visual. Screen readers hear the measurements instead, and each value is always written out beside its drawing.
  • On a phone, a comparison shows two models at a time and scrolls sideways inside the table.
